DRIVING CLINIC – HOW TO TRAIN YOUR PONY / HORSE TO DRIVE

On October 28-29, 2016, at the farm of Mary Middleton in Auburn, Alabama (119 Plantation Way, Auburn, Alabama), a driving clinic will take place with clinic leader Anna Shaw. The cost is $150.00 per person which includes Friday night session with dinner and Saturday all day with a private lesson (meals included). Auditors are welcome Friday night for $20.00 per person and Saturday for $35 per person (meals included).

Clinic instructor Anna Shaw is a long-time horsewoman. She owned and managed her farm in the Montgomery, Alabama, area where she trained many horses and ponies to drive along with teaching riding lessons to include dressage and over fences. She has since moved to the Aiken, South Carolina, area where she has continued to train many ponies and horses to drive. She also competes in CDEs in that area and has trained with Muffy Seaton.

This clinic is designed for the person who has a pony or horse that they would like to start training to drive but have never done anything like this before. It will include review of harness, fitting that harness to your equine partner, bits commonly used in harness, carts and carriages that are commonly used, and how to make sure your cart or carriage fits your equine partner. The entry fee will cover all day auditing of all lessons and a private lesson for each participant. Anna will bring her Shetland pony for anyone to drive if they want to drive an experienced pony. On Friday evening a “potluck” dinner and learning session is planned. She will review the sport of carriage driving eventing (CDE)which is a three-phase event in harness. This sport includes a dressage phase, a cones phase, and a cross-country phase which includes multiple obstacles or hazards that each team of horse and driver must negotiate. She will talk about presentation (turnout) for a CDE.

If this sounds like something you may be interested in learning, call to reserve your spot. If time allows and there is enough interest, another day may be added to the clinic on Sunday, October 30, 2016.  As well, there may be some work driving through cones/obstacles.
