The Cullman County Agricultural Trade Center set the stage for the first ever Colt Starting Challenge put on by the Alabama Horse Council November 4-5, 2017.  Colt starters Ryan Bulkley of Colorado, Josh Peebles of Georgia, Zach Kaup of Nebraska, and Jessica McKinnon Robinson of Alabama were on hand to gentle the untouched colts provided by the Lost Creek Cattle Company of Tennessee. Judges were Barry Faulk, Stan Smith, Donna West, Clay Cox, and Melanie Powe. Entertainment was provided by the inspirational Crystal Lyons riding her Gypsy stallion while singing many of her own original tunes.

The event was the brainchild of AHC member Taylor McIntosh, a talented colt starter himself, who envisioned bringing this type of event to his home state of Alabama. With a similar format to the world famous and most successful colt starting event, Road To The Horse, the Alabama Horse Council has hit on an idea that seems quite popular.  The crowd was enthusiastic and when asked whether they’d like to see more events like this in the future cheered in agreement.

The winners?  Jessica McKinnon Robinson won crowd favorite and Ryan Bulkley took won the challenge champion title, as well as the buckle!

The tireless efforts of the Alabama Horse Council Board of Directors bring events such as the past Alabama Horse Fair and the Colt Starting Challenge to horse lovers not only in this state but across the South.  Kudos to their commitment to continue to provide both equine entertainment and education to the equine-involved public.

Southern Horse Talk was on hand to support their major sponsor, Spurr’s Big Fix (who also supported the event as a vendor) and to take photos of this historic event.  To see more pics, jump on over to our Southern Horse Talk Facebook Page, and be sure to like and leave your comments.
